How to find the best tattoo reference images

Searching for tattoo reference material can be overwhelming, but there’s a few simple things you can do to make it an easier (and succesful!) process.

If you’re getting a realism tattoo, repeat after me: My tattoo is only as good as my reference image.

More on this (and everything else under the sun to consider when getting a realism tattoo) can be found on my post here, but for now here are some guidelines for finding reference images that will bring your idea to life:

  • Good places to start looking for reference images are Google Images and Pinterest (unless of course you are using a personal photo of your own). You could also use Shutterstock and wallpaper websites.

  • Take your time looking for images that appeal to you and that will work well with your design idea.

  • When searching for images, be as specific as possible. E.G. if you would like a tattoo with an eagle and have a particular breed of eagle in mind, instead of searching the word “eagle”, search “wedgetail eagle” for example. It's also good to add in the word "photography" because...

  • Remember that realism tattoos reference photographs only, so make sure that the images you collect are photographs - not drawings, photos of other tattoos, etc.

  • When looking for photos, aim to find ones that:

    • Are high resolution (not blurred, grainy, or unclear)

    • Clearly show the subject matter you would like tattooed

    • Have proper lighting (not under-exposed or over-exposed)

  • If a suitable reference image is not available, Jeremy is able to conduct photo shoots to produce the image required. Please note this will incur an extra fee.

Feel free to send us images you find for us to give you feedback. Alternatively, book a free consultation to discuss in person.

Happy searching!

Jeremy
